June 7-13, 2020 Pet appreciation week

Pet Appreciation Week was created in 1981 by the American Veterinary Medical Association to start an awareness campaign that honors the significance of our furriest companions. This year, the holiday week will be celebrated from June 7-13.

Our pets do so much for us – from loving us unconditionally to alleviating stress and keeping us healthy to even getting us outside for a walk. Here are some ideas to celebrate and show them gratitude.

It goes without saying that you appreciate your pets every day, always, but this week, being mindful will not only fill you with gratitude, but your pet will definitely love it too.

5 Ideas to Celebrate for Dogs (and other pets)

  • It creates a bond with your dog and is a great physical exercise as well. Plus it is good for your dog's mental health and well-being.

  • Aim to play twice a day for a minimum of fifteen minutes. If you want, you can also learn a new trick!

  • TO CELEBRATE: You can play longer with your dog, buy a new toy or learn some new tricks.

  • Exercise needs are based on your dog's age, breed, size, and overall health, but a good rule is you should spend at least 30-60 minutes every day on an activity with your dog.

  • TO CELEBRATE: You can take an extra long walk.

  • SKIN: Good skincare starts at home with regular grooming sessions. Brush your dog as needed and at the same time, inspect their skin for ticks, dry skin or bumps.

  • MOUTH: It is also important to give daily attention to your dog's mouth. Regular brushing with a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste helps, and so do certain toys and treats that are formulated to reduce bacteria in your pet's mouth.

  • NAILS AND PAWS: You should trim your dog’s nails before they make contact with the ground. Paws also need attention, especially in the summer, apply cream when the toes seem dry.

  • TO CELEBRATE: Pamper your dog with some special care, he will love it!!

  • Homemade dog food can offer many benefits. Not only can you offer extra vitamins, but you also know exactly which products you use. Plus, this way you can offer that extra bit of love!
