Easter is coming again! This year will be slightly different from other years. That is why we have to do our best to make it beautiful days, with nice decoration, chocolate eggs, a delicious Easter brunch and family moments (even via video chat).
Easter is a Christian festival, but with a pre-Christian origin. The Germans celebrated the end of winter at Easter - personified in the spring goddess Ostara. The hare and the eggs symbolize fertility and new life.
Eating Easter eggs has to do with fasting. During these abstinence weeks, no one was allowed to eat eggs, but at the end of the fasting period there were so many eggs left that they had to be cooked in time so they wouldn't be spoiled. And so it became a tradition to eat (painted) hard boiled eggs at Easter.
The largest chocolate egg in the world was made in Italy. The egg weighed 7200 kilos and was 19.6 meters high.
Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé designed exclusive Easter eggs at the end of the 19th century on behalf of the Tsar. One of his creations was auctioned in 2007 for 12.5 million euros. It is the most expensive Easter egg in the world.
